After the demise of Amtrak in 2008, who were the main couriers for transporting pigeons throughout the UK, fanciers from all over the UK were left with no way of getting their pigeons to and from other fanciers and breeding studs.
Various people tried to set up there own courier companies in the hope of making fast money !! Many will remember the horror stories of birds been in carry boxes for very long periods of time and arriving in not very good condition, if at all. Out of the Original, starters at that time, we are the only survivors. Its hard work,Very long hours, and keeping viable, is a "juggling act"
Here at U.K. Pigeon Couriers, we studied the logistical viability,
did full costing exercises, and launched in January 2009.
From those early days, having proven from day one, that we had everything right,
we quickly grew to be the Number One U.K. Pigeon Courier,
covering ALL of the Mainland U.K. with the priority being the welfare of the pigeons.
David Thornton is a 3rd generation fancier who has been flying pigeons for over 50+ years, starting as a youngster with his father Bernard Thornton
who used to fly in Leeds, West Yorkshire.
Bernard was a very good local distance flyer and had many good Federation results, and Great Yorkshire Amalgamation positions over the years at all the channel events.
David followed the family tradition of pigeon racing and whilst also living in Leeds he won many prizes and also excelled at the channel events.
In 2008 David relocated to Congleton, Cheshire and continued his love of pigeon racing and joined Congleton West End Flying Club, this club is known as a hard club to fly in. with over 25 active flying members.
Within these 3 short years. with a small team of 12 to 15 pairs, starting from afresh,
we have won 1st Saintes club race 517 miles to the loft, in both 2009 & 2010.
we also have numerous results at National level (NFC) in the top 500 open.
clocking at Tarbes 694 miles, at our 1st attempt. The ambition for the future is to concentrate on the longer distance National events,
Because of his work commitments with running UK Pigeon Couriers David feels that he has not been able to give the birds 100% attention, but hopefully this will change and for 2012 he hopes to improve this already consistent family of pigeons.
The main strains kept at present are Jan Aarden based. Jos Thone Sumo Lines. Rex Doe of Hayle, Cornwall, and local distance pigeons from Stuart Goldstraw .plus a few select Koopman / Kliene Dirk, and Syndicate Lofts pigeons. All the birds are cross bred for racing purposes and tested to the best of our ability. we are always striving to introduce good quality distance pigeons, to upgrade our stock.
